Ever notice how when you’re trying not to think about something, your brain takes that as a personal challenge?
Like, “Don’t eat the cookies.” Suddenly, the cookies are whispering your name from the pantry. Or “Don’t forget to grab your keys,” and somehow you’re halfway to work, keyless, sipping coffee, and questioning your life choices.
It’s not just cookies and car keys, this happens all the time.
We tell ourselves, “I don’t want to be stressed,” “I don’t want to be late,” or “I don’t want my dog to chew another shoe.” And what happens? Stress, traffic, and one very happy, guilty-looking dog.

The truth is, the universe (and maybe our own subconscious) doesn’t seem to hear the don’t. It just locks onto the focus. So if you’re constantly thinking about what you don’t want, you’re basically giving your brain a grocery list of the very things you’re trying to avoid.
Here’s the Mindset Shift:
Start focusing on what you do want instead.
It sounds simple, and it kind of is, but it changes everything.
Instead of saying,
“I don’t want to be late.”
Try:
“I want to be early and have time for coffee.”
Instead of,
“I don’t want to feel stressed.”
Try:
“I want to feel calm and in control.”
And instead of,
“I don’t want my dog to chew my shoes again.”
Try:
“I want to come home to shoes that are exactly where I left them.”
(Maybe with a chew toy nearby, just in case.)
A Couple of Tips:
- Catch yourself mid-don’t.
The next time you hear yourself say, “I don’t want to…” pause and flip it. Rewrite it in your head as something you do want. It takes practice, but it rewires your focus over time. - Visualize the fun part, this is a big one…..
Don’t just think “I want peace.” Picture what peace looks like for you maybe it’s your morning coffee without checking emails, or your dog learning to surf with cool shades on instead of redecorating your living room. The more you picture the good stuff, the more your brain starts scanning for ways to make it real.

Let’s wrap it up:
This is a good way to remember it, life’s a lot like driving, if you keep staring at what you don’t want to hit, you’ll steer straight toward it. But when you keep your eyes out front on where you want to go, somehow, everything aligns a little more smoothly.
So go ahead, focus on what you want. Dream big, stay positive, and keep your eyes on the good stuff (and maybe the cookie jar). Because when your focus is right, everything else, including your snacks and your sanity, tends to fall into place.

Thanks for dropping in! Swing by anytime, life, dogs, and snacks are always in session.
