The Art of Letting Go

If holding grudges burned calories, I would guess that some people would be a bit thinner. Some could possibly have been an Olympic athlete by now. But unfortunately, emotional baggage doesn’t come with abs, it just takes up valuable brain space that could be used to remember where we put our keys.

The truth is, letting go is hard. It’s like trying to get your dog to release a squeaky toy, lots of resistance, some growling, and maybe a bribe or two. But once the toy (or the grudge, or the overthinking, or the sock that got away in the dryer) is finally released, life suddenly feels lighter.

1. Why Letting Go Matters

Holding onto stress, old arguments, people that don’t align with your vision or that one awkward comment you made three years ago isn’t exactly the recipe for stress-free living. The art of letting things go is about choosing peace over perfection, joy in the little things, and learning to laugh at yourself along the way.

2. How to Start Letting Go (Without Losing Your Humor)

  • Step 1: Catch yourself spiraling. If you’re mentally replaying the same scene, press pause.
  • Step 2: Reframe. Ask, “Will this matter in a year? Or even next Tuesday?”
  • Step 3: Replace it with something better. Walk the dog. Watch cat videos. Eat the cookies and/or chocolate-covered raisins.

3. Keeping It Simple

Sometimes the key to finding joy in everyday life is keeping it simple. Your dog doesn’t stew over the squirrel that got away yesterday; he’s already wagging at the next one. Maybe we could learn a thing or two from that.

4. Let it go quickly

Let’s face it the faster it’s behind us the faster we can move on. The faster we move on the more opportunities we have to explore more joyful experiences and surround ourselves with things that will create much better feelings than holding a grudge, being jealous, or holding on to guilt or bitterness…

Letting go doesn’t mean you’re weak; it means you’re strong enough to stop carrying things that don’t serve you anymore. Besides, if my dog can forget about the vacuum cleaner five minutes after barking at it like it’s the end of days, maybe I can forget about the email I sent with a typo or two. I never said I was perfect.

Until next time, may your grudges be light, your joy be heavy, and your tail wag endlessly. 🐾

I hope to see you again next time.
